History

Mrs. Parameshwari who worked as a technical assistant engineer in Tamil Nadu Water Board resigned her job after marriage and became a home maker. She then came to know about the disablement of the women in her locality. Women and children were often referred to as the most vulnerable groups in society, particularly during conflicts.Even though the women were skilled they were not able to findopportunities because of male domination and women unemployment. Mrs. Parameshwari then created awareness about self respect and started a self help group in 1999 and through the group she set up a masala powder making organization called "Sugam" food products. With the profit from the organization she travelled to many places in and around her locality, met people and learnt about their conditions and started to offer the required help. During that time, a hamlet in Theni district was completely renounced because of caste discrimination and was denied of basic necessities. The higher class society would defecate in the fields, bushes, forests or other open spaces where the lower class people lived rather than using the toilet.Mrs.Parameshwari created awareness about cleanliness and hygiene among the villages and made them clean the place and create a path. She also created awareness on the importance of education to all the illiterate women and children. She made them understand that they were incomplete without a good education because it is the fundamental right of everyone and capable of bringing any desired change and upliftment in the human mind and society. In such a competitive world, education has become a necessity for human beings after food, clothing and shelter. Women have always been marginalized and downgraded to the status of subjugated class in the Indian society. During that time, women have not actively participated in their emancipation due to their lack of economic independence and illiteracy. Keeping this issue in mind, she started running training programs like tailoring, handicrafts etc for the empowerment of women. Also with the help of the government she furnished the needs of the people. The social issues like female infanticide, child marriage and the biased thinking of women higher education, etc created an impact on Mrs.Parameshwari. Therefore with her own interest, she started a trust called the Development of Women and Children Trust. The registration of the trust was helped by one of her seniors in Tamil Nadu Water Board who guided her during 2002.The Development of Women and Children Trust is a Non-Governmental organization which primarily focuses onWomen/Gender, Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Children, Trainings, Tribal and Indigenous, Self Help Groups, Youth and their welfare.
